It was a really boring long weekend, and I was also dreading going back to school and having to face Evan. I wondered if I could just avoid him altogether. Mum and Dad had both been trying to talk to me about Dr Spancer. I hated that they thought something was wrong with me. Dad called, and I told him I was busy even though I wasnât. I just wanted to get away from both my parents and away from my life â at least from my waking life.
I tried the charm again that night. This time I followed Veilaâs instructions. I relaxed properly. I turned off the light and faced my own dark bedroom. My mind raced with fears of monsters, snakes, demons, but I got into bed and focused on my breathing.
I counted to slow my breaths the way Veila had shown me â four on the in-breath, six on the out-breath. It was quite relaxing. I decided I was ready to try the charm.
I am water, earth, sun, and sky.
I am dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight.
I am the whisper in the windâ¦
â¦and I am here.
I was in the Grove. I could tell by the uplifting feeling and the swishing sound of the stream. This time the air smelled like vanilla in the warm sun. The kawakawa shrub still glistened in front of me â so maybe it wasnât a warning, but some kind of message. What does it mean?
I had googled it the day before to try to solve the mystery, but all Iâd found was how it was used to treat cuts and itchy bites and digestive issues, and even to bless things like food, births, and deathsâ¦so versatileâ¦but what does it mean here, for me?
I relaxed onto the spongy grass and let my eyes soak up the dazzling wonder of the Grove. I felt soâ¦at home â much more here than I ever did when I was awake.
I couldnât see Veila. I called out to her, but no one came, so I played by myself in the Grove. I watched a beautiful lotus unfold in the pond, blossoming in rainbow colours right before my eyes! I splashed in the stream, which seemed to be somehow bigger than it was last time. I could have sworn I saw a pink glimmer of something in the water, but it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
I lay in the grass, looking at the beautiful sky that swirled in so many shades of purple. I practiced doing backflips â which is pretty good when you can kind of fly, but I didnât fly up too high. Something told me it was safer on the ground.
I noticed bright pink berries growing in little bushes around the Grove. I wondered if they were safe â they smelled delicious like Nannieâs blackberry crumble. They tasted amazing: a combination of pancakes with maple syrup, berry cordial, and cinnamon donuts all put together! The flavour seemed to flow right through my body, making me stronger somehow, and more energised.
